TruNorth Theatre's DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS CLUB is now accepting members! Parents, are you looking for an afterschool club that will encourage your students to use the skills which they are learning in school? If the answer is yes, then DUNGEONS and DRAGONS (DND) is the club for you and your student!
WHY DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS?
In an article by Paul Darvasi, for public radio station KQED in Texas, researchers found that the students who were apart of their local DND club, "substantially outperformed their district on a statewide standardized test". This fact is all the more impressive when it is noted that the majority of students were normal everyday kids, many in fact "had histories of struggling with academics."
This information is echoed by Emily Gaudette's article: When the Teacher is the Dungeon Master; Why you should roll the dice on bringing Dungeons & Dragons into the classroom. She notes not only do schools higher acedeminc scores but, that campaigns can "reinforce material by finding a fantasy analog to real-world topics. Chemistry can become alchemy. World history can become Game of Thrones–style fantasy lore. And then there’s all the math that comes with rolling multiple dice". furthermore, Gaudette notes that such games "activates and stimulates emotional and intellectual engagement that allows players to learn and grow as they become active participants in the ongoing experience." Higher test scores, deeper emotional and intellectual engagement are all positive things, but there is one more thing worth noting.
In a Jan 2022 article for The Association for Library Service to Children, Amberdenise Puckett, notes that students who play DND seem to posses better note taking skills, and have "masters the tools to communicate", far better than their counterparts. The article finds Puckett, echoing the emotional and empathic growth mentioned in prior studies. "Through role playing, students can discover how they may react when faced with racism, death, and phobia in a safe place."
So, if you are looking for a fun, wild (and secret way of reinforcing lesson from school), then DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS CLUB is for you and your student!
